Consider the Henley
The cotton Henley shirt truly is one of the most iconic casual menswear garments in modern history.
With its signature rounded neckline and short, 2-5 button placket, the Henley shirt dates all the way back to the mid-1800’s. Originally worn as an undergarment, this comfortable cotton shirt eventually gained popularity among rowers competing in the Royal Regatta in the British town of Henley-on-Thames.
In the 1970’s, a chance encounter between a Ralph Lauren buyer and a garment merchant resulted in a rebirth of the Henley as an everyday-wear casual garment.
The button placket (three buttons in our case) and collarless neckline give the impression of a casual garment, while simultaneously providing more visual interest and a bit more formality than its crewneck tee counterpart.
The Henley is incredibly versatile and layerable. We love a white or tan Henley under an olive shirt jacket, or a marl grey Henley under a black quilted vest for a more outdoorsy look.
They can be constructed with either short or long sleeves, with the short sleeve version being an exceptional choice for both casual and activewear.
The Henley continues to be a staple of many men’s casual wardrobe, a timelessly cool, functional cotton garment that (when properly fitted) never fails to impress.
