How To: Layer Basics

How To: Layer Basics

We’re incredibly excited to share the launch of our new basics. We’ve been dreaming up all the ways you can pair them with our existing BL offerings, and we broke it down for our new tees, henleys, and sweats below.

Layering Tees

Layering a t-shirt will add a casual element to the garment you’re pairing it with, be it a dress shirt or a blazer. Tee layering comes down to a matching color combination and contrast - a light blue t-shirt worn under an unbuttoned white Oxford shirt, or a white v-neck tee worn under a navy blazer

Layering a Henley

Henleys look their best underneath a heavier top layer; a flannel work shirt, a heavier shirt jacket, a quilted vest or even a chore coat are all excellent top-layer choices. Each combination gives its own respective sense of function (henley under a quilted vest for cooler-weather outdoor activities) or fashion (henley under a chore coat or shirt jacket for a cool, casual-night-out look).

A henley can be worn just like a t-shirt, but the key difference between the two lies in the henley’s rounded neckline and button placket. These details lend the henley a a bit more interest and heightened sense of formality compared to a tee, thus making it even more ideal for layering.

Layering a Sweatshirt

Though sweatshirts are typically considered one of the most casual garments one can wear, they also layer exceptionally well with collared shirts, shirt jackets and even chore coats and blazers.

Try a blue Oxford dress shirt worn under your heather grey sweatshirt to pull off a more traditional Ivy League look. Layering a navy sweatshirt under your chestnut brown coat or blazer will give a cool, more contemporary fall-winter look.

At the end of the day, layering a sweatshirt is incredibly similar to the way one would layer a wool sweater - just a touch more casual. We’ve taken care to design a piece with a clean design that, when paired with a custom fit, makes our sweatshirts just as versatile as your favorite cozy sweater.
