Deck Jacket 101
What is a deck jacket?
A deck jacket is a casual piece of outerwear in a shorter cut that hits right along the hips. They feature a wide spread collar rather than lapels, and generously sized side-entry pockets. The original deck jackets were issued to U.S. Navy servicemen in WWII, and though the design has become modernized over the years, the name stuck.
Details of a deck jacket
Our deck jackets are designed for late fall through winter. For that reason, they are made from a soft but substantial wool-cashmere blend and feature quilted lining in the body for extra insulation. Their wide, side-entry patch pockets provide a warm shelter for cold hands, and an inner chest pocket on the right side provides a convenient place to stash your phone. Though a more casual style, a single button cuff at the end of the sleeve provides a bit of tailored appeal.
When to wear a deck jacket
Deck jackets are a great off-duty alternative to a topcoat or a car coat. But thanks to their wool-cashmere material and our custom fit, they’ll appear more elevated than puffer jackets, hoodies and fleeces. The shorter length also makes them convenient for driving, commuting, or any situation in which you’d rather not have extra fabric to deal with when seated.
How to wear a deck jacket
One of the deck jacket’s strong points is its versatility. It’s casual enough to go with streetwear like jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts, particularly in early to mid-fall. But you can also slip it over button-down shirts and sweaters, and wear with chinos or even dress trousers for a look that’s a bit more dressed-up yet un-stuffy.
You might want a deck jacket if:
You want outerwear that’s more dressed-down than your office attire, but not as casual as your workout wear.
You want the warmth of wool without the bulk or length of a topcoat.
You’re still suffering from pea coat fatigue.
You’re looking for a jacket you can rely on from October to April.
You’re into vintage and styles with military roots.
