What's Royal Oxford?

Don’t be dissuaded by the regal name—royal oxford is a shirting fabric available to those of us without any claim to the throne.

What is royal oxford fabric?
Like regular oxford cloth and pinpoint fabric, royal oxford is a cotton fabric made with a basketweave. But where oxford cloth has a larger, rougher weave and pinpoint has a smaller and finer weave, royal oxford’s weave is both large-scale and lustrous. Its diamond-style weave is visible to the eye and gives it a raised texture, yet it’s woven tightly enough to have a light sheen and a “bounce back” quality that helps prevent wrinkles. Additionally, both the warp and the weft of a royal oxford shirt is woven from one color, while many regular oxford cloth shirts incorporate a colored yarn and a white yarn.

Why should I wear royal oxford fabric?
The light shine of royal oxford makes it a more formal fabric, one that matches well with French cuff shirts and spread collars. Its natural wrinkle-resistance makes it an excellent choice for business travel as well.

When to wear royal oxford fabric

You’ll love royal oxford if you’re looking for a spread or cutaway collar shirt to wear with a formal suit or even a tuxedo.

You should skip royal oxford if you want a casual shirt with a button-down collar.
