What Are Side Tabs?

When it comes to securing the fit of their trousers, most men rely on belts, with a smaller minority opting for suspenders. But there’s a third option that’s too often missing from the discussion: side tabs.

What are side tabs?
Side tabs (also called side adjusters) are a belt alternative for trousers. Trousers with side tabs feature a strip of matching fabric that acts as an attached belt, which can be loosened or tightened depending on which of two buttons are used to secure it. Some side tabs rely on an adjustable buckle rather than buttons, but serve the same function.

Sometimes side tabs are used in tandem with suspenders, but side tabs are perfectly capable of replacing the belt on their own. Trousers featuring side tabs are made without belt loops, so you can never wear them in tandem with a belt (and you wouldn't want to, either).

Why Should A Suit Have Side Tabs?
For the most part, the question of side tabs versus belt loops comes down to a matter of personal preference. Stylistically, side tabs are more formal. Taking belt loops out of the picture makes for a “cleaner” look, and the lack of a belt means that the top and bottom of your suit won’t be visually broken up. Also, you won’t have to worry about finding a belt that works with your suit, or properly matching your belt with your shoes

There’s one category for which side tabs are particularly useful: formalwear. Because of the heightened level of formality, tuxedo trousers should never feature belt loops, making side tabs the natural alternative.

Can Non-Suit Trousers Have Side Tabs?
Of course. If you’re just looking for a pair of grey flannel trousers or khaki chinos and prefer to go sans-belt, either can be made up with side tabs.
