Wedding Dress Code 101
So you’ve just gotten your latest wedding invitation in the mail, and you’re scratching your head trying to decipher what their particular dress code entails. Not to worry! From black tie to casual, we’ll break down each wedding dress code and which wardrobe moves you can and can’t pull off for each.
Black Tie
The black tie wedding is the most formal of all affairs, which means a tuxedo is a must. Jacket style options leave a bit of room for individual touches - you might go with a classic peak lapel jacket, or a more contemporary rounded shawl lapel.
Regardless of style, black is the preferred tux color for these events.
Black Tie Optional or Formal Attire
These weddings give you a bit more leeway as compared to a black tie event. A black tux will be welcome, as will the slighty-less-formal navy tux (which can be done with either navy satin lapels or contrasting black satin lapels).
For non-tuxedo formal options, suit colors should be kept dark. Black, mid-to-dark navy and charcoal are almost always acceptable suit choices for a black tie optional wedding.
Semi-Formal
Also referred to as cocktail attire, the semi-formal has easily become the most popular wedding dress code in recent years. It allows for a much wider berth in suit choices, while simultaneously nudging out the more formal options (black and navy tux).
Suits options can be lighter in color (brighter blues, lighter greys) and a variety of blazer-and-trouser combinations will be excellent options as well. A navy blazer over tan chinos is a classic semi-formal look.

In addition to solid colors, patterned jackets and trousers will also be suitable at a semi-formal wedding. Vests can add a bit of formal flair to a bolder patterned fabric.

Casual
Destination weddings, beach weddings and dressed-down barn weddings are all examples of casual wedding settings. Jackets can typically be foregone here in favor of the open-collar shirt and slacks. On occasion, typically with beach weddings, shorts will be appropriate as well.
