Stretch Chinos vs. 100% Cotton Chinos

Stretch Chinos vs. 100% Cotton Chinos

When is a cotton chino no-longer just a cotton chino? When you have the choice between stretch cotton or 100% cotton. The benefits of and differences of each aren’t always apparent, so we’ve broken them down for you in detail below.

What makes stretch chinos and 100% cotton chinos different?
The answer to that question is found in the percentile. While almost entirely composed of cotton, stretch chinos include a small amount of spandex or elastane in their fabric blend, typically between 1-2%. The non-cotton fabric has very little effect on the chino’s appearance, but it does add literal stretch, allowing the fabric to more easily move with the body and snap back into shape, retaining its shape for a longer period of time versus 100% cotton.

Why wear stretch chinos?
The addition of elastane or spandex makes a stretch chino more flexible and forgiving in fit, and some find them to be more comfortable than 100% cotton chinos. They will also better retain their original fit, thanks to stretch cotton’s ability to snap back into shape.

Why wear 100% cotton chinos?
While the addition of elastane or spandex does not change their appearance, it does affect the feel, and some prefer the hand of a traditional, 100% cotton chino. Chinos made from 100% cotton will also have a “drier” look without the slight sheen that’s common in stretch chinos. Lastly, some find the capacity of 100% cotton to stretch over time a source of comfort.
