The Case for Dressing-Up a Micro-Wedding

The Case for Dressing-Up a Micro-Wedding

Like Zoom meetings and takeout dining, the micro-wedding has emerged as an unexpected trend amid this strange year. And like working from home or ordering cocktails-to-go from your favorite restaurant, the micro-wedding comes with its own advantages: most importantly, it allows you to spend more direct time with the people who matter most.

But a scaled-down ceremony comes with its own questions. Should it be less formal? More? There’s no clear answer, and it comes down to what the betrothed are most comfortable with. That being said we’re happy to make the case for dressing up the micro-wedding.

Why? For one thing, your choice of attire—unlike the venue, invitation list, or the possibility of a dance floor—is not a choice that will be impacted by health and safety guidelines and concerns. It’s possible that you and your partner have had to make some changes to the way you imagined your wedding to look pre-pandemic, but your choice of dress doesn’t have to be affected. Plus, a smaller-sized wedding also makes for smaller-sized expenses. So if you wish, you might be able to splurge on that tuxedo or dark wedding suit you’ve always wanted, but may have held off on in light of other budgetary concerns.

Lastly, there’s the old-fashioned notion that you dress for the occasion, and looking your very best helps to elevate and underscore the importance of that big day, no matter how small the crowd.

Looking for some more specific pointers on what to wear? Here are a few of our favorite options:

  • The Shawl Collar Tuxedo: in classic black or midnight navy, a tuxedo with a shawl collar is more relaxed but no less elegant than the more common peak lapel variety.

  • The Dinner Jacket: The dinner jacket also sports a shawl collar, but is meant to be worn as a separate with black tuxedo pants. It’s a great, classic look in ivory.

  • The Dark Suit: A formal suit in grey or navy twill with a slight sheen also rises to the occasion, and can later be worn as your default choice for any formal event. For something a bit snazzier, you can consider having it made as a three-piece or add peak lapels.
