What Suit Lining Is Right For You?

What Suit Lining Is Right For You?

As we’ve previously explained, there’s a practical purpose to suit linings. But there’s also a reason why all suit linings aren’t just solid navy. Linings provide a subtle way to introduce color and pattern to even the most sober of suits. And if your suit is custom made, you may have dozens of suit lining options to choose from. Which begs the question: what suit lining is right for you?

Solid vs. Pattern
A solid lining is the default choice, and arguably the easiest to wear. If you don’t want the lining of your suit to attract too much attention, you’ll be well served by a dark color like steel blue, bottle green or silver. But if you see the lining of your suit as one more way to express your personality, you may want to dive into a pattern. Some patterns are less bold than others; a simple pin dot pattern can make a subtle impression, while a loud paisley makes a much bigger splash.

If you’re looking for a navy or gray suit that’s all-business, sticking to a solid colored lining is the surest way to keep things professional. But don’t overthink the impact of a lining; after all, it’s still concealed on the inside of your garment.

Synthetic vs. Silk
The great majority of suits linings are made from synthetic fabric, but some suits linings are still made the traditional way, with silk. Whether you prefer a synthetic or silk lining is ultimately a personal choice, as both are functional. But if you enjoy the classic look and feel of silk, silk lining is another way to upgrade your suit to your own tastes.
