What's in a Ply Count?

“Ply count” is one of those phrases that pops up repeatedly in ads, descriptions on websites, or even clothing tags, without much in the way of explanation. To correct that, we’re going to define what exactly a shirt’s ply count entails, and why it matters.

In the very simplest of terms, ply count refers to how many yarns are needed to constitute each of the threads that will make up a finished shirt. Shirts are typically either single-ply or two-ply.

In the case of a two-ply shirt, two yarns have been twisted together to make a thread, which results in a stronger, tighter weave than a single-ply shirt. Not only are two-ply shirts more durable, but they will also have a finer, crisper appearance, which makes them well-suited for dressier or more formal occasions.

If you’re looking for a casual shirt that you can wear with chinos and denim, a single-ply garment will work fine. But if you’re in the market for a shirt that you plan to wear to professional settings or under a sportcoat or a suit, you’ll be better-served by opting for a two-ply shirt that matches your more formal attire.
