What is Donegal?

Donegal refers to a type of wool fabric that was traditionally spun in Donegal County, Ireland. It is characterized by the opposing flecks of color in its weave, which gives it a heathered effect when viewed up close. This makes it much more casual than a solid weave—and allows it to be worn in many different ways.

How can you wear it?

The casual nature of donegal lends itself to casual customization options as well. It’s a natural match with patch pockets, and looks great with knit, textured ties. It can work in a more casual or creative office, but it makes for an ideal “weekend suit” as well—just the type of thing for Thanksgiving dinner.

Because it doesn’t have the “shine” that comes with more finely woven fabrics, donegal suits can easily be broken apart and worn as separates. For instance, the suit jacket can be dressed-down with a flannel shirt and chinos and worn as a sportcoat. Likewise, the trousers can easily be paired off with a dress shirt, tie and sportcoat to become part of an autumn-approved business casual look.
