Collar ID: The Pinpoint
Welcome to Collar ID. This week we’re going to visit the history and the style of the pinpoint collar.
Not as casual as a button down collar but less formal than a spread, the classic pinpoint collar is a happy medium. It was once known as a “Barrymore” collar in tribute to the early 20th-century actor that helped popularize it. It became an old Hollywood staple and has more recently been worn with much success by Daniel Craig’s Bond.
Its simple design points straight down from the face, instead of spreading away from it. This has a lengthening result, making the face appear longer and more narrow. The longer the collar, the greater the effect.
Because of those long collar points, it looks best when worn with a tie. It’s a great choice for slim and skinny ties, which are well-framed by the small space between the two collar points. However, it will play well with most any tie width and is a safe bet for any and all business occasions.
